Congress's First list of candidates for the Lok Sabha elections

Congress comes out with 1st list of candidates for Lok Sabha poll 2014

The ruling Congress party on Saturday released its first list of candidates for 194 seats in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections that includes leaders from all major states.
The list, which was released on Saturday evening has names of predictables such as party chief Sonia Gandhi (from Rae Bareli), Rahul Gandhi (Amethi), Nandan Nilekani (Bangalore South) Deepender Hooda (Rohtak), Lok Sabha speaker Meira Kumar (Sasaram) and foreign minister Salman Khurshid (Farrukhabad).
The surprise names are those of cricketer Mohammad Kaif (Phulpur, UP), Bharatiya Janata Party leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s niece Karuna Shukla (Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh) and Bhojpuri actor Ravi Kishan (Jaunpur, UP)
From Maharashtra, state unit chief Gurudas Kamat (Northwest Mumbai), Priya Dutt (North central) and home minister Sushilkumar Shinde (Solapur) are fielded again.
The list has 13 candidates from Maharashtra, 49 from Uttar Pradesh, 16 from West Bengal, 10 from Bihar, 21 from Madhya Pradesh and 9 from Odisha.
While Union minister Kamal Nath is fighting from his traditional seat Chhindwara, party lawmaker and vice-president Rahul Gandhi’s confidante Meenakshi Natarajan who won the primaries will fight from Mandsaur.
According to a person familiar with the developments in the party, the first list released on Saturday has 35% candidates aged below 50 years.
Lok Sabha elections will be held in nine phases beginning on 7 April and the counting will take place on 16 May.
